perpetual_motion: and he'll kick your ass (damn right he is)

Hey, everyone, if you're reading this, it's the last post for Comic Dork Sunday, and I'm still not sure whether or not the posts are listing in the proper order on your reading pages. If you'd like to read in order, Catch up with Officer Crotch and click through using "Next Entry." (If you're on lj, follow this link and do "Next Entry" from there.)

So, last entry for this Sunday, and I'm going out with my absolute favorite book from the new DC. Yeah, GLC and GL: NG were both AWESOME, but you know what? Scott Snyder is my new comic writer boyfriend, and I am going to ride that wave of awesome for as long as I can.

Let's get spoiled, bitches!

So, we start with Bats beating up dudes in Gotham because, well, why the fuck not. And besides, we get this:

As I shit myself with glorious confusion, there was this fantastic page of Gordon and Bats doing what they do on the roof of the GCPD:

In a page and very few words, it's clear that they're on the same relationship level they've always been, and that made me exceptionally happy.

So, Bats goes back to the cave and plays with a super-creepy new toy (a contact lens that's basically a supercomputer), and the Joker shows up to chit-chat. Except, it turns out:

And it's Dick. Maybe you called that right away, but given all the changes that were talked about and Snyder's writing ability, I was willing to be in a universe where the Joker and Bats has some sort of balls-out crazy alliance. I mean, come on, you know you'd read it.

Also: BANTER. Delicious, snarky, not weighed down with seething anger banter! And, as I was basking in the fact that Bruce has apparently softened enough to take a shit without having a heart attack, I got this page:

THEY'RE STILL A FAMILY MOTHERFUCKERS. MY BATCLAN LIVES!

Look, I know Steph is in the ether, and I love her, so that sucks, but she wouldn't have been here anyway. This is a scene about Bruce's close family, and that's him and the boys. Steph was never a part of that, so I am not disappointed that she's missing. Also, oh my god, look at Damien's little red shoes and how Tim is helping him with the collar as they all do a round of snark. The super-creepy part of Damien seems to have been filed down without his acidic personality losing anything, and I like that they're acting like brothers rather than two brothers and Damien (as happened sometimes when Dick and Tim worked together during Dick's Bat days.) I also love that it's Dick getting the best shots off Bruce. Snyder's peeled back some darkness and some fucked-up history and given us a damn-near WARM Batclan, and you know what? I AM ON THIS FUCKING BOAT. I can't WAIT to see the Batclan as a fully functioning family. I can't wait to see Damien and Tim snipe like brothers rather than a 10-year-old kid getting ready to murder an 18-year-old (as actually happened pre-reboot). Bruce is still obsessive and a bit dark, but it's not that undending darkness that made it so hard to read him for so long.

::breathe::

Anyway, before I call it good, how's about some Alfred snark?

Goddamnit, Alfred, I love you. ALso, Vicky, hi! So nice to see you face first!

And Harvey being gloriously Harvey:

Oh, and this moment, which practically made me jump out of my seat:

If you didn't read Snyder's run on Detective, the dude in Arkam in the glasses won't be familiar, so allow me to spoil you: You remember way back when Jim Gordon had a son and Babs? Well, yeah, that's James, and he's completely fucked in the head, and Detective ended with the possibility that he'd managed to slip a whole generation of Gotham kids with a medical cocktail that would create thousands of sociopaths. And, yes, timeline muckery abounds, but I am entirely too pleased he made it through the reboot. His addition to the rogues gallery offers too many opportunities to have him fall off the face of the Earth.

LOVED IT SO MUCH. I've said it a few more times today, but it bears repeating: I still have no idea how the fuck this timeline works. I imagine if I read JLA or Action Comics, it'd clear things up a little, but life is too short to read comics I don't care much about when I have all the stuff I've talked about today. There are portions of the new DC I won't touch with a ten-foot rage pole, but I wasn't planning on reading them anyway, so I sort of double-win.
